INSTRUMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
All students are responsible for the proper upkeep of their instrument. Mrs. Scott will make periodic checks of the student’s instruments. If a repair is recommended, please have it repaired immediately. It is impossible to teach a student to correctly play an instrument that does not function properly. Students are required to bring a receipt from the repair shop to prove the instrument is being repaired. Failure to do so will result in the student receiving a zero for each day they are without an instrument, daily instruction is difficult if not impossible to make up. When an instrument must go to the shop for repairs, the student needs to keep their mouthpiece (and reeds) and bring it to school in case a school loaner is available for them to play. Students who are unable to play in class for any reason such as, “I don’t have any reeds,” or “I left my instrument at home,” will receive a zero for the day.

If extra instruments are available, students may keep one at home for practice purposes for $30.00. The school does not rent flutes, clarinets, alto saxophones, tenor saxophones, trumpets, or trombones. All checks need to be made out to CAMS.
I know all of the above equipment is very specific, but based on cost and quality these are the best equipment and accessories for the band program’s success. I do understand that a few of you will be playing used instruments that may not be of the specified brand. If so, remember that the proper mouthpieces and accessories will be needed and the used instrument needs to be checked by a professional repairman before the student brings it to school. This is very picky, but nothing is more frustrating to the student than to start learning on an instrument that does not work properly. Many times used instruments are not worth the amount of repair necessary and your money would be more wisely spent on a new instrument.
I know all of the information, and yes expense, can be overwhelming. I am willing to answer any of your questions and help in any way to acquire the necessary items. Do not hesitate to call or come by for help. My only intention is to make the CAMS Band the best possible learning situation for the students.
Sincerely,
Becky Scott
